The Virginia English Journal publishes articles of interest to English teachers.
The Virginia English Journal is a fully refereed journal. In addition to publishing full length articles on English language arts teaching and learning, we feature teaching ideas in our Great Teaching ideas column.
No one teacher possesses all the knowledge required to teach the ever-widening range of topics and students that we face from year to year. Yet there is a solution. We can learn from each other. This column asks you to share, with fellow teachers, the activities, materials, or assignments that have worked for you and your students. By sharing ideas and borrowing ideas, teachers work together to develop repertoires of strategies that work. We invite your submissions.
The Virginia English Journal invites you to submit articles of two to ten pages describing great teaching ideas. Chosen submissions will be featured in our great teaching ideas column, which appears in each spring and fall issue of The Virginia English Journal.

Themed Issue on the Best of the Best — When Nothing But the Best Will Do
This special themed issue is meant to highlight the outstanding work being done throughout the state of Virginia by English teachers at all grade levels. For this special themed issue we would like to expand upon our “Great Teaching Ideas” feature and invite participants to submit research articles and other related works that exemplify the very best that they do on a day to day basis. What is your “go to” lesson plan or unit plan? What is that one activity that you know will always work? What lesson or activity do your students remember you by? Please take this time to share your personal teaching experiences with colleagues across our state and around the world.
The state of Virginia is a true microcosm of our nation as a whole. Few states offer the diversity of culture and traditions as found in our fair state. And yet, the Virginia Association of Teachers of English brings us all together as we work to improve the lives of our students. No matter their location, teachers across the state are working toward the singular goal of improving students’ lives. Regardless the region, the importance of students being able to read and write is the shared goal of members of VATE statewide. This issue is dedicated to the work of all of those members that dedicate their time and energy to improving the lives and opportunities of all of our students.

In addition to publishing full length articles on English language arts teaching and learning, we feature teaching ideas in our Great Teaching Ideas column and are now encouraging current English and English Education majors to submit their work for the new “Promising Young Scholars” section we will feature each issue.
Deadline: November 15, 2014
Authors should submit their articles electronically as e-mail attachments, preferably Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect; however, other formats and word processing programs are acceptable. We do not accept simultaneous submissions. Please include your mailing address, as well as a short biographical sketch including the name of your school, position, courses taught, and a brief statement about your professional life; also include a statement of submission noting that the work has not been submitted elsewhere simultaneously for publication.
