The Virginia Association of Teachers of English (VATE) invites you to participate in our 2nd Annual African American Read-In, a celebration of Black literary excellence and culture!

As part of the National African American Read-In, launched in 1990 by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), we are committed to making literacy a significant part of Black History Month. Over the years, this initiative has encouraged thousands to read works by African American authors, fostering a love for diverse voices in literature.

This year, participants will have the opportunity to read and discuss selections from:
📖 The Artivist by Nikkolas Smith
📖 New Kid by Jerry Craft
📖 Bitter by Akwaeke Emezi
📖 The First Next Time by James Baldwin

We encourage you to pick a book, dive into its themes, and join us for a meaningful conversation celebrating Black literature!
