VATE student awards and scholarships
The Beachside Biathlon is a non-competitive beach walk and/or jog and poetry writing contest that is a fundraiser to help defray the costs of VATE's student scholarships. Entry fee is a ten dollar donation, and all fees collected will be used for student scholarships and awards. The Biathlon is a "fun" event with some "serious" prizes including: A night’s stay at the Wyndham Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel, free VATE memberships, and bottles of Virginia Wines.
The Biathlon will consist of a writing contest in which participants will receive a topic, a formula (True poets will cringe at that!), and twenty to thirty minutes to complete a poem. Then participants will engage in a leisurely stroll on the beach, but the truly athletic may run or jog if they wish. While participants are on the walk, the poems will be judged, and the winners will be announced at the conclusion of the walk.
Winners will be encouraged to share their poems during the open mic time at the Opening Social, which will follow soon after the Biathlon.
